Take a trip inside a snake and see a parasite that lives in snake lungs. These pentastomes are now an important conservation concern since a species from southern Asia has been introduced into Florida and is now infecting native snake species. Here is some video by Jim Wellehan (University of Florida School of Veterinary Medicine) that shows a trip into one of our pygmy rattlesnakes using an endoscope (via a small incision on the snake’s side) that results in the removal of one of these nasty parasites. The last part of the video shows a trip up to the top of the lung to where the trachea enters the lung; the heart can be seen beating through the transparent lung wall.
